Describe the differences and similarities between double slit interference and the interference that occurs when using a diffraction grating

Homework Answers

Answer #1

DIFFERENCES:

(1) In case of diffraction grating, interference maximum is sharper than compared to that of double slit interference.

(2) Also interference maximum has more intensity in case of grating.

SIMILARITIES:

(1) Interference pattern formed in both grating as well as double slit are similar in nature.

(2) In both cases when light hits a screen, depending on what phase each beam is in they will interfere either constructively, providing maxima, or destructively, providing minima.

I have a laboratory experiment on Young's double slit interference. My instructor asked us how increasing the distance effects and pattern of interference, and how decreasing slit width affects the pattern of interference. I know that if we increase the separation between the slits, we have more interference fringes produced. What I do not know is how decreasing the slit width affects how many interference fringes are produced? I researched the topic and I', getting conflicting answers as some say...
