A man holding a rock sits on a sled that is sliding across a frozen lake (negligible friction) with a speed of 0.490 m/s. The total mass of the sled, man, and rock is 97.5 kg. The mass of the rock is 0.320 kg and the man can throw it with a speed of 17.0 m/s. Both speeds are relative to the ground. Determine the speed of the sled in m/s if the man throws the rock forward (i.e. in the direction the sled is moving).

What is the speed of the sled in the previous question if the rock is thrown in the opposite direction?

A 41.0-kg child finds himself trapped on the surface of a frozen lake, 10.0 m from the shore. The child slips with each step on the frictionless ice and remains the same distance from the shoreline. Egged on by his parents, he throws a 0.300-kg ball he is carrying toward the center of the lake with a horizontal speed of 2.00 m/s, in the direction opposite that of the shoreline. (The speed of the ball is relative to the lake.)...

You are stuck in the middle of a frictionless frozen lake without any reception. To get back to the shoreline, you decide you must throw your phone away. You throw it with a velocity of 20.0 m/s, at an angle of 10° above the horizontal. If your mass is 20.0 kg and your phone is 100 g, what is your speed after you throw your phone

a 90 kg mini car moves at 10 m/s across fairly smooth ice on a frozen lake toward a rock with a mass of 6 kg. when thrown it becomes lodged in the mini car. How fast would the rock need to be moving to stop the mini cars approach on impact? Include a useful sketch of the pre/post situation. According to Wikipedia, the Skeleton is a winter sliding sport in which a person rides a small sled, known as a skeleton bobsled, down a frozen track while lying face down and head-first. The sport and the sled may have been named from the bony appearance of the sled. Like the bobsleigh, the race begins with a running start from the opening gate at the top of the course. The maximum combined mass of the athlete + sled is 115...
