Yes motor and generator are fundamentally different due to the following reasons :

1) principle of working - generators work on the principle of Electromagnetic induction whereas the motor works on the principle that current carrying coils experience a force when immersed in magnetic field.

2) usage - generators are used to generate electricity from mechanical energy whereas motors are use to develop mechanical energy from electrical energy.

3) example- motors are used in fans , vehicles etc , generators are used to produce electricity artificially in institutions, malls , offices etc.
