What is the magnitude of the angular momentum, about Earth’s center, of an 84 kg person on the equator due to the Earth’s rotation?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Mass of a person m = 84 kg

Radius of earth R = 6.37 x10 6 m

Period of earth in its own axis T = 24 hrs

                                                = 24 x 60 x 60 s

Angular speed of earth

                                      = 7.272 x10 -5 rad / s

Angular momentum L = mvR

                                 = m(R) R

                                 = mR 2

Substitute values you get L = 84 kg x (7.272 x10 -5 rad / s)(6.37 x10 6 m ) 2

                                         = 2.478 x10 11 kg m 2 / s

Earth’s equatorial radius is about 6378 km. What is the centripetal acceleration experienced by a person standing at the Equator due to Earth’s rotation? (Answer using SI units) Imagine the same person standing at the Equator of planet X, which has the same radius and mass as the Earth, but a shorter, 8-hour long day.
