Two playground balls, the type used in the game of dodgeball, are inflated to different levels but have the same mass. One is fully inflated and the other is flat. If you had to get hit with one ball, which one would you prefer. Why?

If you are playing dodgeball, is dodging a ball easier than dodging a wrench? Explain.

Answer #1

If one was to get hit with the ball then one should prefer the ball which is comparatively flat because the flat ball would impart all its initial momentum to the player and thereby the player will experience some force . ∆p = m(0-u) = -mu

But if the player gets hit with more inflated ball , then the ball would impart double momentum as compared to the flat ball because this ball would bounce back with same velocity in opposite direction as it's initial direction of motion.

∆p = m(-u -u ) = -2mu , therefore this ball will exert a greater force and cause more harm .

There are two balls with different qualities in a black box, a red ball and a purple ball. If you randomly pick one ball from this black box and denote the result using x variable, let x=1 if you get a red ball, and x=0 if you get a purple ball, further suppose the probability to get a red ball is α. You play this game of choosing a ball N times independently, i=1,2,3,...N, denote the joint result of this...

You're riding a bike with two different wheels of equal mass and radius. One has its mass distributed like a hollow cylinder, and the other has its mass distributed like a solid cylinder. You notice that it's difficult to get your bike to move when you start pedaling. To make it easier to start moving, you decide to make it so that both wheels are the same. Which one should you replace, and why?

1. Consider a 45-ball lottery game. In total there are 45 balls numbered 1 through to 45 inclusive. 4 balls are drawn (chosen randomly), one at a time, without replacement (so that a ball cannot be chosen more than once). To win the grand prize, a lottery player must have the same numbers selected as those that are drawn. Order of the numbers is not important so that if a lottery player has chosen the combination 1, 2, 3, 4...

Two different types of polishing solutions are being evaluated for possible use in a tumble-polish operation for manufacturing intraocular lenses used in the human eye following cataract surgery. Three hundred lenses were tumble-polished using the first polishing solution and of this number, 253 had no polishing-induced defects. Another three hundred lenses were tumble-polished using second polishing solution, and 196 lenses were satisfactory upon completion. We need to test if there is any reason to believe that the two polishing solutions...

Instructions: In 1974, Loftus and Palmer conducted a classic study demonstrating how the language used to ask a question can influence eyewitness memory. In the study, college students watched a film of an automobile accident and then were asked questions about what they saw. One group was asked, “About how fast were the cars going when they smashed into each other?” Another group was asked the same question except the verb was changed to “hit” instead of “smashed into.” The...
