show via a free body diagram that only the horizontal portion of the circuit board wire contributes to the vertical magnetic force.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Here is the drawing.

The current on the right vertical portion is pointed upwards, with the magnetic field pointing into the page. By right hand rule, magnetic force is pointing to the left.

The current on the left vertical portion is pointed downwards, with the magnetic field pointing into the page. so,

magnetic force is pointing to the right.

Therefore,

magnetic force that results from the vertical portions of the circuit board cancel each other out.

This is the reason only the horizontal portion of the circuit board wire contributes to the vertical magnetic force.
