10. The radio galaxy 3C 79 has a redshift of z = 0:256. How far away is it?

(a) 1000 Mpc

(b) 16 Mpc

(c) 2300 Mpc

(d) 130 Mpc

(e) 8100 Mpc

Homework Answers

Answer #1

We know the Hubble's law is given as,

Here. z = redshift of the object (here galaxy) = 0.256

c = speed of light = 3 x 108 m/s

H0 = Hubble's constant at present time = 70 km/s/Mpc = 70000 m/s/Mpc

d = distance to the galaxy

Putting the values we get,

This is the closest to the option (a) 1000 Mpc. The discrepancy is due to the fact that here most probably different value for H0 is considered. Now, if H0 is taken as 76.8 km/s/Mpc, then following the same procedure one will get the distance (d) to the galaxy as = 1000 Mpc.

#6 a). Suppose the temperature of the atmosphere has the dependence T=T(0)e^(−z/z(0)). Find an expression for the pressure p(z). b). Suppose the atmosphere has its temperature equal to 300 K and pressure 1000 hPa at z = 0. The temperature profile falls linearly with a lapse rate of 6 K km−1 up to 10 km. Above 10 km the temperature is constant. What is the pressure as a function of z? c). Use the results of a) to compute the...
