The hypsometric equation relates height above the ground or a reference altitude to the corresponding presure at each height. Write out this equation below, identify each term in this equation and show that the units are correct.

a. Compute the height above sea level of the 500 mb pressure level assuming that the average virtual tempurerature of the layer from the surface to 50 mb is -20 degrees C.

b. At a location in the atmosphere where the average virtual temperature is 10 degrees C, find the height difference between 1000 hpa and 850 hpa levels.
