Determine the area required for a FWS constructed wetland used to treat primary treated wastewater with an influent BOD of 120 mg/L. To be assured of odorless operation, the maximum organic loading rate is to be equal to or less that 100 lb BOD/ac.d. Assume the overall first-order BOD removal rate constant is 1.0 d-1 at 20°C. The average wastewater temperature during the coldest month is about 10°C. The average water depth is to be 1.25 ft. Because of evaporation, the effluent flowrate is equal to 0.7 ´ the influent flow rate. Assume that the plant porosity if 0.60 and that the average BOD in the effluent due to plant decay is 8 mg/L. The combined effluent BOD (from plant decay and residual from influent) must be 25 mg/L or less. The observed temperature coefficient and COR values for a similar FWS system in the same temperature regime are 1.02 and 0.50 (at 99 percent), respectively.

Problem #3: Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Stream Quality A wastewater treatment plant designed for a community of 45,000 people has a flow of 100 gal/person/day and a BOD5 loading of 0.2 lb/person/day. The upstream characteristics of the receiving waters are: stream flow rate = 20 cfs and BOD5 = 2 mg/L The water quality standards require the in-stream BOD5 to be less than 7 mg/L in this stretch of the river. The minimum BOD removal efficiency that the treatment...

A municipal wastewater having a BOD5 of 225 mg/L is to be treated by a two-stage trickling filter. The desired effluent quality is 30 mg/L of BOD5. If both of the filter depths are to be 1.83 m and the recirculation ratio is 2:1, find the required filter diameters if both the two trickling filers have same removal efficiencies. Use NRC equation and the following design assumptions. Design assumptions: o Influent flow = 10,000 m3 /d o Recirculation ratio =...

A 14 mgd wastewater treatment plant has a primary clarifier that treats an influent with 800 mg/L of solids and a removal efficiency of 55%. Sludge at the bottom of the tank is pumped at a rate of 0.1 mgd. a. What is the effluent solids concentration from the clarifier (in mg/L)? b. You have been retained to design a wastewater treatment plant using a conventional activated sludge process for a town of 40,000 people. The industrial flow contribution to the sewer system is 300,000 gallons per day. Effluent discharge standards require effluent BOD5 and total suspended solids concentration of <10 mg/l. Assume the following design criteria are applicable: Domestic sewage flow = 100 gal/cap/day (including I/I) BOD loading = 0.18 lbs/cap/day TSS loading = 0.20 lbs/cap/day BOD removal in primary = 33%...

A 2,250 m3/day extended aeration system is used to treat sewage from Taman Maju Jaya. The average BOD influent of the sewage treatment plant is 250 mg/L and is reduced by 65% after the primary clarifier. It has two rectangular aeration tanks (working in parallel) with a dimension of 4 m width, 6 m length and 3.5 m water depth. The aeration tank maintains a biomass concentration of about 4000 mg/L. (i) Determine the food-to-microorganism ratio of the aeration tank...
