This question has several parts that must be completed sequentially. If you skip a part of the question, you will not receive any points for the skipped part, and you will not be able to come back to the skipped part.

Tutorial Exercise

Consider the following figure.

An open circuit containing four resistors starts at point a and ends at point b. The circuit extends up and to the right from point a to a 4.00 Ω resistor. The circuit then extends to the right to point c, where it splits into two parallel horizontal branches. There is a 7.00 Ω resistor on the top branch and a resistor of resistance R on the bottom branch. The branches then recombine to meet at point d. The circuit extends to the right from point d to a 9.00 Ω resistor. The circuit then continues to the right and down until it reaches point b.

(a) Find the equivalent resistance between points a and b in the figure. (R = 14.5 Ω)

(b) Calculate the current in each resistor if a potential difference of 55.0 V is applied between points a and b.

A uniform magnetic field is directed into the screen. There are two parallel conducting rails, running horizontally, in the field, with a conducting rod on top of the rails. The rails are a distance L apart. The picture shows a force F directed to the right on the rod. The rails are joined at the left by a resistor of resistance R. We'll use these values: L = 20 cm; B = 4.0 T; F = 3.2 N; and R...
