What is the different line broadening mechanisms in gases and solid-state materials and what are the physical principles involved?

Answer #1

Different line broadening mechanisms in gases and solid-state materials:

The gases have mainly: Absorption line broadening mechanisms - Because the atoms and molecules in the gas are wide apart and they absorbs the incident energy, and then create broad lines (spectrum) by the excitation of their electrons.

Where as in solid-state materials, the Emission line broadening mechanism takes place, because the solid-state materials are very dense and compact, which causes incident energy wave or ray to reflect back or emission, which finally results in the broad line pattern on the screen.

Physical principles involved are: Absorption, Emission, Reflection ( or the combination of any two or three).
