Name two different wavelength selectors and the method in which they select a select a particular wavelength. Which has the greatest sensitivity? Which has the highest resolution? Justify your answer.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

We can create wavelength selectors using different absorption filters or cutoff filters, which results in passing of only selected wavelength through them.

Let first wavelength selector is a filter which passes only "590-560nm" i.e. yellow light photons.

second lets take a red photons "650-700nm"

The method can be used are: Diffraction grating, Interference fringes.

The yellow light will have high resolution then red because it has shorter wavelength then red.

But red light will have higher sensitivity because of is longer wavelength, it scatter less and gives greater sensitivity then yellow.

In two-photon ionization spectroscopy, the combined energies carried by two different photons are used to remove an electron from an atom or molecule. In such an experiment a copper atom in the gas phase is to be ionized by two different light beams, one of which has wavelength 327 nm. What is the maximum wavelength for the second beam that will cause two-photon ionization? Please answer in nanometers Hint: The ionization energy of copper is 745.4 kJ/mol please
