Explain how current and voltage change for EACH of the following

1. Resistor

2.Capacitor

3.Inductor

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1. Resistor : a resistor is simple energy dissipating passive device. It's voltage and current have linear relationship

So it's voltage and current are in phase and vary linearly.

2. Capacitor : a capacitor is an energy storage device which follows relation between charge and voltage as

Q=CV

Differentiating this equation we get current

Which means voltage and current have a phase difference of 90°. So they always stay out of phase and current is 90° ahead of voltage.

3. Inductor : inductor is magnetic energy storage device. It's voltage , inductance and current hold a relationship as

So here also both voltage and current are out of phase and voltage is 90° ahead of current .
