Question

Two ice skaters, with masses of 71 kg and49 kg , stand facing each other on a 11-m-widefrozen river. The skaters push off against each other, glide backward straight toward the river's edges, and reach the edges at exactly the same time.

How far did the 71 kg skater glide?

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units

Answer #1

Here ,

mass , m1 = 71 Kg

mass , m2 = 40 Kg

let the 71 kg skater is x m from the edge

v1 is the speed of 71 kg

v2 is the speed of 40 kg

distance of 40 Kg = 11 - x

Now , as there is no external force acting on system of skaters

change in momentum = 0

m1 * v1 - m2 * v2 = 0

71 * v1 = 40 * v2 ---(1)

Now ,as the time taken to reach is same for both

d1/v1 = d2/v2

x/(v1) = (11 - x)/v2

from 1

x/(40 * v2/71) = (11 - x)/v2

x/(40/71) = (11 - x)

**x = 3.96 m**

**the 71 kg glider is 3.96 m from the edge**

Two ice skaters, with masses of 67 kg and 53 kg , stand facing
each other on a 13-m-wide frozen river. The skaters push off
against each other, glide backward straight toward the river's
edges, and reach the edges at exactly the same time.

Two ice skaters, with masses of 40 kg and 85 kg, are at the
center of a 60 m -diameter circular rink. The skaters push off
against each other and glide to opposite edges of the rink.
If the heavier skater reaches the edge in 40 s, how long does
the lighter skater take to reach the edge?
Express your answer in seconds.

Two ice skaters, with masses of 30.0 kgkg and 75.0 kgkg , are at
the center of a 60.0 mm -diameter circular rink. The skaters push
off against each other and glide to opposite edges of the rink.
If the heavier skater reaches the edge in 40.0 ss , how long
does the lighter skater take to reach the edge?

Two ice skaters stand at rest in the center of an ice rink. When
they push off against one another the 45-kg skater acquires a speed
of 0.68 m/s. If the speed of the other skater is 0.88 m/s, what is
this skater's mass?

Two
figure skaters stand facing each other on the ice. The woman, who
has a mass of 50 kg, pushes against the man, who has a mass of 100
kg, with 100 N of force. What happens? What are the accelerations
of each? (Ignore friction)

Three ice skaters meet at the center of a rink and each stands
at rest facing the center, within arm's reach of the other two. On
a signal, each skater pushes himself away from the other two across
the frictionless ice. After the push, skater A with mass mA = 75.0
kg moves in the negative y-direction at 4.00 m/s and skater B with
mass mB = 70.0 kg moves in the negative x-direction at 2.00 m/s.

A pair of figure skaters glide holding hands on a frictionless
ice rink, at a speed of 3.0 m/s and heading due East in a straight
line. They then push away from each other. Skater A, of mass 48 kg,
glides off at a speed of 3.8 m/s and at angle of 29 degrees
counterclockwise with respect to the original direction. Skater B
has a mass of 72 kg.

. Two skaters each of mass 50.0 kg
approach each other along parallel paths separated by 3.00 m. they
have opposite velocities of 1.40 m/s each. One skater holds the end
of a long pole of negligible mass, and the other skater grabs the
other end of it as she passes. Assume the ice provides a
frictionless surface. (a) Describe quantitatively the motion of the
skaters after they have become connected by the pole. (b) Calculate
the kinetic energy of...

Two ice skaters stand together as illustrated in Figure 3.28
(page 76). They push off and travel directly away from each other,
the boy with a speed of 0.69 m/s. If the girl has a mass that is
three fourths that of the boy, (a) What is the velocity of the
girl? (+ is same direction as boy)
