You have just discovered a new radioactive element! You find that it first undergoes an alpha decay followed by a beta decay. During the alpha decay Q1 energy is released, and during the beta decay Q2 energy is released. Find an expression for the mass of the final product after these two decays in terms of the released energies, the mass of the parent nucleus, and the decay products. For your physical representation you should draw diagrams of the particles emitted in each decay with vectors representing their velocities and labels for their kinetic energy. Hint: you should use conservation of energy to find the expression.

Answer #1

Alpha Decay:

; for this reaction, energy release is given as,

Rearranging:

------- Equation 1

Beta Decay:

Similarly, as mentioned above, energy equation is as follows;

Rearranging:

------- Equation 2

Combining equation 1 and 2:

This is the derived expression for the mass of the final product.

You leave your love to find a new home for humanity by taking a rocket to explore the universe. The rocket uses solar and nuclear fission energy sources. You are both 30 years old when you depart. You return 80 years younger than your love at 41 years old. The nuclear fuel has 92 protons and 143 neutrons with a mass of 4.3857876E-25kg, which is hit by one neutron to cause a fission to occur. The solar panel has a...

1. In the search for a site for the disposal of radioactive waste, a stringent requirement has been imposed, which is that the waste should not have a chance to leak out for at least 10,000 years. What do you think sets this age scale? 2. By looking up the masses of the neutron, proton, and electron, find the maximum energy, in MeV, of an electron produced in the decay of a neutron (i.e. one neutron decays to a proton,...
