A room has negligible background noise. A sound is turned on with SIL = 100 dB. After awhile, the sound is turned off rapidly. What is the SIL after a time interval equal to the reverberation time?

Answer #1

Reverberation time is the time required for the sound to “fade away” or decay in a closed space. Sound in a room will repeatedly bounce off surfaces such as the floor, walls, ceiling, windows or tables.when these reflections mix, a phenomeon known as reverberation is created. Reverberation reduces when the reflections hit surfaces that can absorb sound such as curtains, chairs and even people.Actually the reverberation time of a room or space is defined as the time it takes for sound to decay by 60dB. So the SIL after a time interval equal to reverberation time is 40 dB.

For testing, a reference sound source is used in an equipment room. The sound source that has a sound power level of 94.5 dB(A) can produce a steady-state sound pressure of 87 dB(A) due to the reverberant field only inside the room. Now, the existing equipment of this room generates a steady reverberant field of 83 dB(A). Three sound sources in simultaneous operation combine to produce a noise intensity level of 73.3 dB at the ears of a listener. The source producing a 71.0 dB level and the source producing a 69.0 dB level are switched off. What is the sound intensity level at the listener’s ears due to the remaining source acting alone?

A room (8 m x 6 m x 4 m (height)) with hard sound reflecting surfaces is to be decorated for meeting purpose. The reverberation time is measured and found to be 3 seconds in a particular octave band. Calculate how much extra sound absorption must be provided to reduce the reverberation time to 0.8 s, that is suitable for speech and discussion. Assume that a carpet is added on the entire floor with the value of α = 0.2...

Airliners taking off from City Central Airport produce a mean noise level of 108 dB (decibels), with a standard deviation of 6.7 dB. To encourage airlines to refit their aircraft with quieter engines, any airliners with a noise level above 120 dB must pay a “nuisance fee”. a. What percent of the airliners will be billed a nuisance fee? b. After two years, a sample of 1000 airliners showed that 3 were billed the nuisance fee. Assuming that the program...

Dolphins emit sound bursts that range in frequency from 1 Hz to 120 kHz. Say that a dolphin is using a sound burst consisting of these frequencies as a form of sonar (like the bat example). Let the burst last for a time interval of 10 ms, after which it listens for 100 ms. Say that the logarithmic intensity (loudness) of the dolphin’s sound is 50 dB as measured at 1 m away. Dolphins can hear sounds that are 2...
