Early one October, you go to a pumpkin patch to select your Halloween pumpkin. You lift the 2.8 kg pumpkin to a height of 1.0 m , then carry it 50.0 m (on level ground) to the check-out stand. A)Calculate the work you do on the pumpkin as you lift it from the ground.B) How much work do you do on the pumpkin as you carry it from the field?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

PART (A):

Mass of pumpkin, m = 2.8 kg

Height to which it is rise, h = 1.0 m

Acceleration due to gravity, g = 9.8 m/s2

Therefore, Work done on the pumpkin for lifting:

W = mgh

W = (2.8 kg) x (9.8 m/s2) x (1.0 m)

W = 27.44 J

-------------------------------------------------------

PART B:

We know that the force acting on the pumpkin is vertical (weight of the pumpkin).

Hence, there is no force along the direction of horizontal displacement.

Therefore, work done on the pumpkin as you carry it from the field = 0 J

1) You wish to accelerate a small merry-go-round from rest to a rotational speed of one-fourth of a revolution per second by pushing tangentially on it. Assume the merry-go-round is a disk with a mass of 300 kg and a radius of 2.00 m . Ignoring friction, how hard do you have to push tangentially to accomplish this in 6.00 s ?
