  1. Polarized filters are great for aligning light, but if you hold two filters oriented 90 to one another, light will not pass through. Now put a third polaroid filter between two such that it makes a 45-degree angle to each of the other two filters. Now, some light gets through – why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Suppose the first polarizer is horizontal one and the second polarizer is vertical one. When an unpolarized light is incident on the first(horizontal) polarizer then the light will be horizontally polarized. After that when it falls on the second, it will completely block the light since it is vertical polarizer.

But if we place a third Polaroid in between these making an angle of 45°,it will allow half of the intensity from the first polarizer according to its polarizing axis of itself . Then the emergent light rays can be passed through the vertical because now it is not exactly horizontal or half of the photons does not have the 'memory ' that it is horizontally polarized.

Polarized light is incident on three polarizing filters in a row. The initial intensity of the light is 4 W/m^2. The first filter is aligned vertically, the second at an angle of 45 degrees from vertical, and the third at an angle of 90 degrees from vertical. Afterwards the intensity is 0.5 W/m^2. At what angle relative to the vertical was the light initially polarized (give your answer as an angle between 0 and 90 degrees)?

Unpolarized light with intensity I0 shines through a series of two polarizing filters. The first is oriented 30° counter-clockwise from vertical and the second is oriented 60° clockwise from vertical. a.) Find the light intensity as it emerges from the first filter (in terms of I0). b.) Find the light intensity as it emerges from the second filter (in terms of I0). Q77. You can change the direction of polarization of light from vertical to horizontal. Behind the first filter, place a second at 45-degree orientation (clockwise) relative to the first, and a third at another 45-degree orientation to the second (also clockwise). By how much is the intensity reduced using these two filters? What happens if the middle filter is removed? (Question about The Nature of Light)
