The flight deck of the U.S.S. Nimitz (the ship I spent 4 years on) is about 60ft above the water, depending on load. If a member of the flight deck crew falls into the water and reaches a depth of 45ft, estimate the average force exerted by the water on them. (assume a constant force).
Challenge: what if we don’t assume a constant force? We could model the force using a constant of proportionality. First assume F ∝ v, then assume F ∝ v^2. How does that change the maximum force exerted on the person?
