Specific gravity is defined as the ratio of density of object to density of water.

Find the mass of the object with simple balance accurately

Find it's volume by using measuring instruments depending on shape and size of object

If the object is small and regular shaped find volume by using vernier caliperse by measuring dimensions like length, breadth and height.

If the object has no shape then find the volume by suspending the object in liquid like water.

The density of object = mass of object / volume of object.

The ratio of the density of object to density of water is called specific gravity.

Specific gravity has no unit. Because it is a ratio. It's value is same in any system.
