Hi I need a experimental question and hypothesis related to modern physics such as: A very broad area ranging from atomic physics to particle physics; to relativity, Focus on simplistic model of a hydrogen atom,Emission spectra of light bulbs and color temperature, Emission spectra of excited atoms, and How to measure the spectra? These are a few examples of what could be written about.

This is for a physics lab discussion

  • Develop a group EQ and hypothesis and a systematic method to understand the underlying optical principles in an application or atomic physics and emission spectra

Feel free to add anything else! I am super lost about this topic so if you could give me a general idea that would be great, thank you so much!

Answer #1

The simplest of atoms : the hydrogen atom in reality is not so simple. The simple spectral lines that we see on careful examination is found to be furthur split. This splitting is due to electronic spin and relativistic corrections to non relativistic schrodinger equation. A fundamental constant of the universe called fine structure constant pops up while studying it.

When the red spectral line of the spectrum of hydrogen is examined at very high resolution, it is found to be a closely-spaced doublet. This splitting can be used as evidences for electron spin and is called fine structure splitting.
