Three small objects, a cube, a solid sphere, and a solid cylinder, are released simultaneously from the top of three inclines planes with inclination angles of 15°, 30°, and 60° respectively. The horizontal distances between the top and bottom of the inclines are the same. Assume that the cube slides down without friction while the sphere and cylinder roll down without slipping. Rank the order in which the objects reach the bottom of the inclined planes from first to last?
Answer: sphere, cylinder, cube
Obviously rolling without slipping is a case of pure rotation. An object having more contact area with rolling surface will suffer more friction.Hence will reach down later.
A sphere is having less contact area than a cylinder thus having
less friction. It will roll faster.so it will reach first to the
bottom of inclined plane.Sphere is the most symmetrical in shape,no
matter at what angle it is rolled down ,there will be no effect on
it .secondly cylinder being having pure rotation will roll
down.
A cube will reach in the last due to its structure which makes it
tough to roll faster.Even it has more contact area at any
angle.
