If a buzzing light bulb produces noise with an intensity of 41.0 dB, what noise level could be produced by 72.0 buzzing light bulbs?

Answer #1

Sound level is given by:

SL1 = 10*log (I1/I0)

SL1 = Sound level of single buzzing bulb = 41.0 dB

I0 = Human thershold of Intensity = 10^-12 W/m^2

I1 = Intensity of single buzzing bulb = ?

I1 = I0*10^(SL1/10)

I1 = (10^-12)*10^(41.0/10)

I1 = 1.26*10^-8 W/m^2

So, total intensity made by 72.0 buzzing light bulbs will be:

I = 72.0*I1 = 72.0*1.26*10^-8

I = 9.06*10^-7 W/m^2

now noise level will be:

SL = 10*log(I/I0)

SL = 10*log[(9.06*10^-7)/(10^-12)]

SL = 59.6 dB
