1. Know whether latent heat energy is absorbed or released for the various phase changes: melt/freeze, vaporize/condense.

2. What kind of a process is a phase change?

3. How does mean free path change with gases heated at constant pressure?

4. By what factor will the mean free path change as the number of gas particles changes ay constant volume?

5. For two different ideal gases at the same volume and temperature, what’s the same and what’s different?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1) during melting latent heat energy is absorbed whereas while freezing, latent heat energy is released. Latent heat energy is absorbed during vapourisation whereas it is released during condensation.

2) phase change is an isothermic process, because all the heat absorbed or released during phase change goes into latent heat and thereby the Temperature remains constant.

3) mean free path increases as it is directly proportional to the temperature of gas.
