A mountain makes an angle of 30° with the horizontal and a ski lift is to be pulled up the side of the mountain, dragged along on the snow by a towing line connected to a motor. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the ski lift and the snow is μk = 0.2. The chair with people will have a mass of 75 kg and has an initial speed of 1.5 m/s. After being dragged 8 meters up the side of the mountain it has a speed of 3 m/s. Choosing between two motors: one that can provide a towing force of 900 Newtons, and the other capable of pulling with a force of 450 Newtons (which costs half as much as the more powerful motor).

1) Draw a Free Body Diagram of the ski lift, showing all forces acting on the lift

2) Which motor should you purchase so that you will be able to pull the ski lift under the conditions described above?

A child is sitting on a sled and together they have a mass of 25.0 kg. The sled is being pulled by a rope which is angled 15 degrees from the slope. The sled is being pulled at a constant speed of 1.22 m/s up a 25.0 degrees hill that is 65.0 meters long. If the coefficient of friction between the sled and the snow is 0.180, what force is being used to pull the sled?
