Homework Answers

Answer #1

for construvtive interference path difference = 1,2 times wavelength

path difference = 2*t / N

for 1*lambda

1*wavelength = 2*501/1.42 = 705.633 nm

for 2 lambda

2*lambda = 2*501/1.42

lambda = 352.81 nm (not visible)

so wavelength for constructive interference = 705.633 nm

b) for destructive interference path difference = 1/2 or 3/2 wavelengths

for 1/2 lambda

1/2*lambda = 2*501/1.42

lambda = 1411.267 nm ( not visible)

for 3/2 lambda

3/2*lambda = 2*501/1.42

lambda = 470.422 nm

c) color of reflected light is red

d) color of most part of transmitted light is blue

A pool of water is covered with a film of oil which is 256 nm thick. For what wavelength of visible light (in air) will the reflected light constructively interfere? The index of refraction of the oil is 1.65. Visible light (in air) has wavelengths between 430 nm (blue) and 770 nm (red) in air. Assume that the incident light is normal to the surface of the oil.

A 720 nm thick oil film floats on a plastic plate. White light incident from air strikes the film at normal incidence. What visible wavelengths will be constructively reflected from the film? Take the wavelength of visible light in air to be from 400 nm to 700 nm. The index of refraction of the plate is 1.47 and that of the film is 1.60.

A 659-nm-thick soap film (nfilm=1.33) rests on a glass plate (nglass=1.52). White light strikes the film at normal incidence. What visible wavelengths will be constructively reflected from the film? If there is more than one answer, separate them by a comma. (Units in nm)

A jewelry maker has asked your glass studio to produce a sheet of dichroic glass that will appear red for transmitted light and blue for reflected light. You decide that "red light" should be centered at 656 nm and that "blue light" is 492 nm. If you use a MgF2 coating (n = 1.39), how thick should the coating be? nm

A thin film in air is made by putting a thin layer of acetone (n = 1.25) on a layer of water (n = 1.33). When visible light (400nm – 700 nm) shines normally on the film an observed from above, the bright reflected light looks kind of “purplish” with red light of wavelength 650 nm mixed some blue giving it that appearance and “greenish” light of wavelength 520 nm is completely destroyed. Determine the thickness of the acetone film....

White light is shone on a very thin layer of glass (n = 1.5), and above the glass layer, interference maxima for two wavelengths (and no other in between) are seen: one green wavelength of 550 nm, and one orange wavelength of 610 nm.
