Interference and beat frequencies can happen with any waves. Give an example of each for a wave that is not a sound wave.

Answer #1

Consider ripples on water.

Consider two sources of ripples on water, source A, and Source B, such that bot are on x axis of our reference system
Now, If source A and source B have osscilation frequencies seperated by a frequency difference del(f), then at any point in the water surface, we will observe beats on the surface of water, with beat frequency del(f).
Now understand, this beat will not be audible to us as it is not beats due to sound waves, but due to waves on the surface of water.

Is it possible for two waves traveling in the same direction to interfere and produce a wave with an amplitude larger than either of the two initial waves? A.Yes. This is an example of destructive interference. B.No. It is impossible for two waves heading in the same direction to interfere with each other. C.No. Waves cannot combine and will bend to pass around each other if they meet at a point. D. Yes. This is an example of constructive interference.
