Describe the various methods by which friction between two surfaces can be reduced.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

There are different methods to reduce friction between two surfaces.

1. Making the surface smooth. Friction is less in smooth surfaces. This can be achieved by polishing the surfaces.

2. Use lubricants between the surfaces.

3. Rolling friction is less than sliding friction. Hence using ball bearings will help to reduce the friction.

4. Friction is a contact force. Reducing area of contact will reduce friction. So streamlining of objects will reduce friction.

Two blocks are positioned on surfaces, each inclined at the same angle of 45.4 degrees with respect to the horizontal. The blocks are connected by a rope which rests on a frictionless pulley at the top of the inclines as shown, so the blocks can slide together. The mass of the black block is 4.22 kg, and the coefficient of kinetic friction for both blocks and inclines is 0.370. Assume static friction has been overcome and that everything can slide....
