A 50 kg box slides on a flat surface, initially sliding at 50 m/s.

It has a smaller, 10 kg box on top, initially moving at the same velocity as the box.

The coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.5 for the largebox against the ground, and 0.4 for the smaller box against the larger box.

a) Both boxes start to slow from friction, but the larger box experiences a larger deceleration than the small one. This means the smaller box will slide on the surface of the larger one. How long does it take for the large box to stop?

b) How much longer does it take for the small box to stop? Assume the bottom box is large enough for the small one to never to slide off its side.

A box rests on top of a flat bed truck. The box has a mass of m = 18 kg. Box 1 of mass 2 kg is pressed against a spring with spring constant 600 N/m that is initially compressed by 0.5 m. Question 4 A box of mass 75.8 kg is initially sliding upward (in the positive direction) on a rough incline that makes an angle α = 58o with the horizontal. As in the previous problem: a massless string is tied to the box, runs parallel to the incline, passes over a frictionless pulley and is tied to mass M = 85 kg hanging on the other end. A stationary block of mass 5 kg explodes into two pieces L and R that slide across a frictionless floor. The left piece slides across the region with friction and stops, the right piece compresses a spring. Momentum is conserved during the explosion. Piece L has a mass of 2 kg and encounters a flat surface with coefficient of kinetic friction µL = 0.4 and slides to a stop in distance dL = 0.5 m. Piece R slides across the...

A block of 1 kg, initially launched with a speed of 4 m/s rolls across a horizontal table surface over a distance of 3 m before coming to a stop, due to friction. I am not specifying μk, but I am telling you that μs < 1. Next the block is attached to a horizontal, unstretched spring of spring force constant k = 10 N/m, and given the same launching speed, on the same (horizontal) table surface. The other end...
