You toss a truck into the air at an angle of theta above the horizontal so that it will travel in an arc... off the side of a cliff - in the middle of winter. After you throw it, you know the following:

  1. the horizontal component of the truck's velocity is 16.4 m/s.
  2. the vertical component of the truck's velocity is 16.9 m/s.
  3. The truck is in free fall (no air resistance) while it is in the air.

What is the magnitude of the truck's velocity 8 seconds after you throw it? (t = 8 s)

---------------------

Hint: If you get a negative value for either the vertical or the horizontal component of the velocity don't worry! When you combine them the values will be squared, so the negatives should go away. You should have a positive number!

Answer #1

This is a projectile motion

Here

Horizontal Component of velocity doesnot change throughout the motion : at t = 8 s ,

Vertical Component of velocity change under the influence of gravity,

Vertical Component of velocity ,

You throw a rock at initial speed v0 with an upward angle theta (relative to horizontal) off the edge of a deck of height y0 above the ground. (a) Prove that the speed of v of the rock just before it hits the ground is independent of theta. (b) If v0 = 11m/s and y0 = 13m, what is v(in m/s)?

A shot putter releases the shot some distance above the level ground with a velocity of 11.8 m/s, 52.8° above the horizontal. The shot hits the ground 2.10 s later. You can ignore air resistance. (Assume the horizontal direction of the shot and upward are positive.) While he is in mid air, a cliff diver throws a 0.2kg mass ball horizontally with respect to himself with a speed of 10m/s in the positive direction. At the instant he threw the ball his downward speed as would be measured by someone standing on the cliff was 10 m/s. You shoot a 0.0050-kg bullet into a 2.0-kg wooden block at rest on a horizontal surface. After hitting dead center on a hard knot that runs through the block horizontally, the bullet pushes out the knot. It takes the bullet 1.0 ms to travel through the block, and as it does so, it experiences an x component of acceleration of -4.8× 10^5 m/s2. After the bullet pushes the knot out, the knot and bullet together have an x component of...
