Consider a planet with a surface temperature of 50 K an escape speed of 30 km/s. What type of planet must this be?

A. Jovian

B. Terrestrial

Homework Answers

Answer #1

As the surface temperature of the planet is 50K so it is very far away from the center of solar system. The below graph shows the temperature dependency of planets with distance from the center of solar system.

Also the escape velocity is more than twice that on earth. Escape velocity on earth is 11.2 km/s. Terrestrial planets will be similar in size to earth so escape velocities will also be in the same range.

This suggests that the given planet is very massive in size with more gravitational pull.

Both the facts suggest that it is a Jovian planet. So option A is correct.
