A 900kg steel sphere is attached to a ceiling with a 10m cable. It is lifted up until the cable is at an angle of 15 degrees with the vertical. Once it is released what will the speed be at the bottom?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Gravitational acceleration = g = 9.81 m/s2

Mass of the steel sphere = M = 900 kg

Length of the cable = L = 10 m

Angle the cable is pulled up to = = 15o

Height through which the steel sphere falls after it is released = H

From the figure,

Speed of the steel sphere at the bottom = V

The initial potential energy of the steel sphere is converted into the kinetic energy of the steel sphere at the bottom.

V = 2.59 m/s

Speed of the steel sphere at the bottom = 2.59 m/s

A car with a hanging mass attached to the ceiling starts from rest up a hill and the driver never presses on the gas or the brakes. Once reaching the bottom of the hill the road levels out horizontally for a short distance then curves around a flat 30-m-radius circular path. While the car is rounding the curve the hanging mass makes an angle of 30˚ with respect to the vertical. Assume no energy is lost to friction. (a) What...

A.) A simple pendulum is suspended from the ceiling by means of a string of length 2.10 m. Assume that there is no friction or air resistance. Suppose you were to release the pendulum from rest, starting from an angle of 44.3 degrees with respect to the vertical, as shown.
