You just worked through a basic rotational dynamics lab. Here, the pendulum does not really move along a straight line. It has rotational energy as well as kinetic energy. Discuss potential sources of error in the momentum of the projectile due to any rotation.

Answer #1

The pendulum is not really a simple pendulum i.e. a point mass on a massless rod so, a systematic error is introduced. Rotational inertia of the pendulum is ignored during this experiment. Doing so resulted in the actual value of velocity of the ball being slower than the value we calculated during the experiment?. Friction is also an soure of error. Friction is slowing the pendulum which means that actual momentum of the projectile is less than we calculated in the experiment.

Revisiting the ballistic pendulum. In lab we used both conservation of momentum and conservation of energy to relate the launch speed of a projectile to the maximum height of the swing of a pendulum. Here we will study the parts of this problem in a bit more detail. (a) Briefly explain why momentum is conserved during the collision of the projectile and the pendulum, but mechanical energy is not conserved. (b) Briefly explain why mechanical energy (kinetic plus potential energy)...

As you saw from the lab PowerPoint slides last week, you will be doing a research study looking at ‘Aggression Priming” for your first paper. For this week’s discussion, I want you to discuss with your group what you think this study is about. What is the hypothesis? What theory does it come from? What do you predict will happen (do you expect something different than the hypothesis in the researcher instructions? If so, what and why?)? Do you think...
