EM waves in matter:
According to Maxwell electromagnetic waves do not only travel in vacuum but they also get through solid and liquid media. For example, light waves through air, electron beam through metal, x-ray through human body etc.
Electromagnetic waves travel the fastest in vacuum; with velocity given by
Energy and Momentum carried by EM waves:
Electromagnetic waves carry both energy and momentum. This is transferred to the object the waves fall on. For example, Sun rays falling on the Earth heat it up along with its atmosphere. The force experienced by an electron in a magnetic field is a proof that the electron beam which is an EM wave, has both force and momentum.
Standing EM waves:
The waves that do not change in amplitude and wavelength over passing through media, appear to be standing i.e. constant. These are called standing waves.
