Three cylindrical objects are stacked as shown in the diagram below. The bottom cylinder has a diameter of 35.5 cm, the middle cylinder has a diameter of 18.4 cm, and the top cylinder has a diameter of 6.7, and each cylinder is 20 cm tall. How far from the left side of the three cylinders will the x-coordinate of the center of mass be? You can assume that all three cylinders are made of the same material. Give your answer in cm.

Answer #1

As there is no figure given, let's assume that the cylinders are stacked symmetrically one on the other as described. In this case, we will have the cylinder with greatest diameter (35.5 cm) in consideration for locating the center of mass.

It is now easy to say that the center of mass would be at a distance of 35.5/2 cm or 17.75 cm. on the x-coordinate.

The numerical, I think, wouldn't be this easy. The figure has not been given and our assumption has made it easy.
