In a semiconductor diode current -voltage characteristics is described by the depletion layer.The primary function of a semiconductor diode is rectification of ac to dc .When diode is forward biased it will pass current and when reverse biased it blockes current that is when hogher potential is commected to anode it pass current otherwise when commected to cathode it blockes current.
