14. Explain and describe how waves can be categorized according to the following:

(a) how it vibrates a medium

(b) the type of medium it vibrates

15. (a) Make a sketch of a simple standing wave.

(b) Label the nodes and antinodes.

(c) State which would be caused by destructive interference. Explain your reasoning.

25. Explain the concept of polarization and what this “proves” about light. Be clear.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

14.

a)

Transverse wave - the wave is vibrating perpendicular to the direction the wave is traveling

Longitudinal wave - the wave is vibrating  in the same direction as that in which the wave is traveling.

b)

Mechanical wave - wave there is an oscillation of matter need for the transfer of energy through a medium.

Electromagnetic waves - oscillation of matter is not needed for the transfer of energy (no medium required )

15.

a) & b)

c)

Nodes are caused by destructive interference, beacuse the resultant displacement of the waves becomes Zero

25.

The process of transtforming unpolarized light into polarized light is known as polarization. That is the vibrations of light are restricted to a single plane.

This proves the wave nature of light
