Which one of the two phase transitions (freezing or vaporizing) has the larger magnitude in the change of entropy? Explain in terms of statistical model of entropy.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Phase transition during freezing has the larger magnitude in the change of Entropy.

Explanation:-

Chqnge in entropy during phase change is defined as:-

∆S = change in enthalpy/ temperature (absolute)

Enthalp values in both the processes are comparable.

But, since the temperature in freezing will be much lower than the temperature in vaporizing, enthalpy change in freezing will contribute to larger magnitude of change in randomness of the molecules. Hence, it's magnitude of entropy change will be larger.
