What happens to a ferromagnetic material when it is placed in a magnetic field?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

When a ferromagnetic material is placed in a magnetic field then there is a change in size of domain if the field is weak. To better understand this, the size of the domain increases which lies in the direction of magnetic field and also the domain which lies opposite to the direction of magnetic field experience a decrease in size. This happens when the magnetic field is weak.

Now if the magnetic field is strong then the domain experience a torques and rotate itself in the direction of magnetic field .

What is the reason that a typical ferromagnetic material without applied field usually forms many small magnetic domains, instead of just a single big domain. Hint: To form a magnetic domain wall costs energy (exchange energy & anisotropy energy); a single big domain saves free energy
