A first quarter moon is in front of the constellation Taurus when it just rises above your eastern horizon. About what time of day is it and what phase will the moon be in when it passes below your western horizon?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The time of day that the Moon rises or sets depends on its phase. This should be obvious when you remember that the phase of the Moon depends on the relative positions of the Sun, Moon and Earth. For example when the Moon is Full it is opposite the Earth from the Sun, so when the Sun sets, the Moon must rise and vice versa.

ans a) The first quarter of the moon rises at noon, transits the meridian at sunset and sets at midnight. .
So the time of the day to the first question is ----> its local noon.

ans b)and when it passes below my western horizon its third quarter of the moon.

A total solar eclipse is a rare phenomenon that happens at the same location once in about 200 years. During this phenomenon, the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun as seen from Earth. Given the visible diameter of the Moon is very close to the visible diameter of the Sun, the Moon covers the Sun completely and the part of Earth in the Moon’s shadow plunges into darkness during the daytime. The average shadow of the Moon on...
