Two electrons are at rest on the x-axis of a coordinate system. The ?rst is at x =0 and the second is at x = 1 m. Which of the following is possible at some time in the future?

A. One electron will be at a negative x-position and one will be at a positive x-position.

B. Both electrons will be at positive x-positions.

C. Both electrons will be at negative x-positions.

D. One electron will be at rest while the other is moving.

Answer #1

as electrons are same charged particles, they will move away from each other.

this is due to the repulsive force, given by kq1q2/r2

where k is the constant,

q1 and q2 are charges

r is the distance between charges

as the force is repulsive, it is possible that the electron at x=0 will move towards negative x-axis (away from another electron)

and the electron at x=1 will move towards positive x-axis(away from another electron initially at x=0)

hence, at a given point in time, it is possible that one is at negative x-position and another at positive x-position.

option (A) is correct
