The more balls you juggle at once, the higher in the air you need to throw them. In order to practice high, accurate tosses, a novice juggler tosses a bean-bag vertically into the air and catches it when it comes back down. If the ball is in the air for a total of 1.8 seconds (from leaving her hand to being caught again), what was the maximum height of the ball above her hand?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The ball's motion is symmetrical in going up and coming down as the acceleration due to gravity is constant for short heights.

Therefore the ball takes 0.9 seconds to reach the maximum height and then it takes 0.9 seconds to come down to the hand.

The distance travelled when the ball in coming down from the maximum height is

Since at maximum height the velocity of the ball u=0.

Hence, the maximum height reached by ball is 3.97 m.
