Noise-cancelling headphones allow users to listen to music at lower volume levels, by removing unwanted background noise that may distract from the listening experience. This unwanted noise destructively interferes with the music etc. and removing allows us to play the music etc. at a lower volume.

However, noise-cancelling headphones use the same principle of destructive interference to cancel noise. A microphone built into the headphone is able to analyze the waveform of the ambinet noise, and generates a negative waveform corresponding to it. This negative waveform has perfect destructive interference with the noise, and results in the noise getting completely cancelled.
