Explain an example of how a fish manipulates its boundary layer to reduce drag.

Explain an example of how a fish manipulates its boundary layer to reduce drag.

Answer #1

The viscosity of water causes the flow close to the surface of any biotic or abiotic object to move more slowly . This spatial gradient in flow is known as the boundary layer. Skin frictional drag, which is the dominant factor in the total drag of a swimming fish, is created in the boundary layer due to the viscosity of the fluid . Therefore, the boundary layer is an important component of the hydrodynamics of fish swimming. Furthermore, the boundary layer over the surface of a fish's body plays a major role in determining the signals detected by a lateral line mechanoreceptor . Despite the critical roles of the boundary layer in swimming hydrodynamics and lateral line flow sensing in fishes, the boundary layer structure of a swimming fish has rarely been studied experimentally.

In a lab experiment for a flat plate zero-pressure gradient boundary layer it is desired to find the friction coefficient (Cf) at location x=1 m from the leading edge of the plate. In order to do this, the momentum thickness of the boundary layer is measured at two locations 0.005m on either side of x=1m. the momentum thickness is measured to be 1.638 mm at x=0.995m and 1.652mm at x=1.005m, respectively, when the approach or free-stream velocity is 5m/s. a)...
