A car of mass 1500 kg is moving along a highway at a speed of 55 mi/h relative to the ground. Calculate the kinetic energy of the car, in joules.
Kinetic energy of any object is defined as,
where m is the mass on an object and v is the velocity of that object.
Here m =1500 kg and v= 55 mi/hr . In order to calculate in joules, we need to convert mi/hr to m/sec. We know 1mi = 1609.344 m thus 55 mi = 55*1609.344 m = 88513.92m. Thus now v= 8.851392 *10^4 m/ hr.
We also know that 1hr = 3600 sec. thus v= 88513.92/3600 m/s = 24.5872m/s.
