What would happen to the abundance of 4He if we lived in a Universe in which there was a large energy-density in relic gravitational radiation (i.e. gravitational waves produced at very early times)?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The earlier universe was very hot and dense. The whole universe was filled with radiation and elementary particles, and a hot plasma in which energy was distributed evenly. During the subsequent expansion, this plasma released the heat and has progressively cooled down. During cooling, Big Bang Nucleosynthesis strongly favours the formation of very light elements including like hydrogen and helium . The standard hydrogen has only one proton and helium-4 has two neutrons and two protons.

If the amount of He-4 is abudance, then due to nuceosynthesis, our universe is again expanding.

It looks like there is an earth sized planet in the habitable zone of Proxima Centauri, located 4.2 ly from the solar system. It would be cool to send a probe to check it out. Perhaps the most reasonable way of doing this is to construct a very small micro-spaceship connected to a large flat screen which absorbs radiation: a solar sail. We will model the sail as a perfectly absorbing flat screen, and the sun's radiation as plane waves....

11/ imagine that you have obtained spectra for several galaxies and have measured the redshift of each one to determine its speed away from us. Here are your results: Galaxy 1: recession velocity is 15000 km/s Galaxy 2: recession velocity is 20000 km/s Galaxy 3: recession velocity is 25000 km/s Estimate the distance to each galaxy from Hubble’s Law. Assume that H0 = 22km/s/Mlyr A/ The distances are as follows: Galaxy 1: 0.00147 Mlyr Galaxy 2: 0.000110 Mlyr Galaxy 3:...
