What is the role of refractive index in photonic devices? Give examples from LED, diode laser and photodetector, and waveguides?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

consider photonic devices like LED
in LED, the light has to come out of the glass bulb only uptill certain angles so as to maintain a desirable spot of the emitted light
this can be acheived by total internal reflection, by which means light escapes bulb upto a certain angle
now total internal reflection is a property due to refratction of light

similiarly, for diode laser, photodetectors and waveguides the refractive index of the medioum coating the device plays an
important role to control the role of the device using total internal reflection which is a functino of the refractive index of this transparent coating material

What would cause a refractive index of a synthesized sample to be different than it's known value from the CRC Handbook, etc. I synthesized cyclohexanone from cyclohexanol with bleach and acetic acid through simple distillation and separation, finally aspiration. CRC Handbook says the refractive index of cyclohexanone is 1.450 Our sample, looks very exact in regards to IR spectrum, had a RI of 1.3551 What are some possibilities? Thanks!

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device (p-n junction diode) that emits light when an electric current is passed through it. LEDs are becoming the most popular light sources because they are much more energy efficient than conventional incandescent light sources. While the "white" light produced by a light bulb or the sun is a blend of many different colors, and these sources typically produce a large amount of heat, LEDs release only one particular color of light, and...
