The thermal conductivity of air is less. So, it helps to maintain the warm temperature of the body by acting as a resistant of cold with the environment. Also with time Fur on animals body have same temperature as that of surrounding, thus maintaining no temperature difference with the surrounding. Due to this no heat is exchanged with the surrounding.
