A person lives on the third floor of a building and he runs up the stairs three times a day. Each floor has 24 steps and height of each step is 15 cm.

              a) If the person mass is 60 kg calculate how much energy he uses each day.

              b) If he runs from first floor to the third floor in 20 seconds, calculate the person power output.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) The person runs up 3 floors three times, climbing 24 steps each of 15 cm=0.15 m

So, displacement is

So, amount of work done is equal to the product of the weight of the person and the displacement.

This amount of work done is stored as energy. So, energy usd per day is 6350.4 J

b) It takes 20 s to run from first floor to third floor. So, to climb up 3 times it takes 60 s.

So, power output is

1) If a person holds 50 kg object at a height of 2 m above the floor for 10 s. How much work is done? W = F×d (2) The work done in lifting 30kg of bricks to a height of 20m is W = m ×g × d (Formula, W = F × d but Force = m × g) (3) A total of 4900 J is used to lift a 50-kg mass. If a person of mass M simply moved forward with speed V, his kinetic energy would be 12MV2. However, in addition to possessing a forward motion, various parts of his body (such as the arms and legs) undergo rotation. Therefore, his total kinetic energy is the sum of the energy from his forward motion plus the rotational kinetic energy of his arms and legs. The purpose of this problem is to see how much this rotational motion contributes to the...
