A) Pure mercury isnt just a toxic heavy metal, its also a liquid at room temperature. Mercury has a melting point of 38.8C and a boiling point 357.7C. The fictional HG temperature scale is setup so that mercurys melting point is 0 Hg and boiling point is 100 Hg. What is absolute zero on the Hg temperture scale? I've already answer this and got -59.105, I just need help on part b please!!!!
B) Calculate the boiling point of water on the fictional Hg temperature scale?
The difference in temperature is:
357.7 - 38.8 = 318.9 oC
this temperature difference is segmented in 100 readings ranging from 0 to 100 Hg.
so,
the temperature in Celsius and temperature in Hg are then related by the formula:
T(in C) = 38.8 + 3.189 T' (in Hg)
for absolute zero, T = - 273
- 273 = 38.8 + 3.189T'
=> T' = - 97.77 Hg
this is the absolute zero in Hg scale.
B] Here, T = 100
100 = 38.8 + 3.189T'
=> T' = 19.19 Hg.
this is the temperature of boiling water in Hg scale.
